U3A groups in the United Kingdom are members of the Third Age Trust. This is an international movement developed from the French Universities original concept. In the UK it provides continued education as part of the national education for the retired and companionship for that age group. No formal qualifications are needed but self-help is the cornerstone offering opportunities to learn from each other, contributing particular skills, knowledge, experience and friendship. Members give talks, act as co-ordinators or just enjoy the company. There is an annual subscription giving national affiliation and local membership. General meetings are held, a group programme is organised; a copy of the local Newsletter and U3A’s national newspaper “The Third Age” are provided.
